Chanting guide overview
Each chanting guide has three main sections:
  • leftmost are Pali chants
  • center is Pali text interleaved with an English translation
  • rightmost is a Pali-to-English glossary
Chanting In the Pali chants columns, one or two chanting styles are present, each excerpted into verses and lines (or, in some cases, half lines). Thus, one could choose a chanting style, memorize individual lines and then entire verses and, for longer works, entire suttas.
Pronunciation In the Pali text section, each Pali word is separated into syllables. In Pali verse, syllables are either 'light' or 'heavy.' In general, a heavy syllable is chanted twice as long as (and, in some recordings, chanted higher than) a light syllable. For more details on Pali versification, see this site's Pali primer.
Meaning In the Pali text section, each Pali word is highlighted in white . To learn more about a Pali word's meaning, click on the related Pali word in the Pali-English glossary to bring up a complete dictionary definition.
